It looks like it has been burned. Is it alive or dead? So delicate it could be a bead on a Victorian lady’s hat. It is one of nature’s beautiful contrasts: black/dead, green/alive.

An almond! I would not have guessed, though as a kid I used to see walnuts hanging from trees and was always surprised that they were so much larger than the shelled nuts I was used to seeing in our house. And they were also black if I found them on the ground.
