Every winter when I look at the bare limbs of a fig tree, I marvel at the power of nature. That within something which looks so dead, so solid, life lives. That one day soon the conditions will be just right, something will trigger spring growth and the buds will fatten. Sun, rain, warmth. But at the moment, stillness. Dormancy is the right word, I guess, for a fig tree on New Year’s Day which is waiting for spring.
